“Selling brown sugar to this Mex gang will be easy,” he told her as he showed her something on the screen of the device in his hand. Before she could ask him what he was talking about, he exited the car. Amber watched as he walked ahead under the glare of the headlights. She noticed two males exit their low-riding car. They scanned the area carefully before they walked over to Bobby, holding the duffle bag.

Amber rolled down the window, trying to listen to the men talk. She heard parts of the conversation as the thin leader of the group spoke with Bobby. Despite the distance, it was clear the two men talking with her boyfriend were not friendly. She overheard Bobby asking about the money. The first man shook his head, insisting on seeing inside the duffle. Bobby reluctantly opened his bag, pulling out a small plastic-wrapped package, which he tossed over to the second man. The large burly man, wearing only a leather vest over a tee shirt despite the chilly night, caught the item and went back to his car. He was speaking in Spanish back to the other people inside. Not long after, the doors of the low riding car opened, and two more men got out. The big man in the leather vest carried a small bag to the leader of the gang.

Amber’s eyes widened after she caught a glint coming from something in the hands of the two men who got out of the other vehicle. The knot in her stomach tightened. The leader of the gang gave Bobby the bag. He turned over the duffel bag. Then, she caught the gang leader telling Bobby that their friends had stolen a shipment. Bobby gave a disinterested shrug, replying he had heard about that. He assured the gang leader his stuff came out of Chicago, and he would soon have more for them. He started back to the car. Amber watched her beaming lover, clutching their dreams in his hand. She allowed herself to breathe.
