Chapter 29
After Amber helped Warren into his room, he carefully walked into the bathroom while the woman sat on the end of the brass bed. While the outside of the building was brick, the room carried a log cabin décor with wooden planks on the walls. Antlers were used to create the body of a table lamp sitting on the light color pine dresser. She was glad there wasn’t the head of an animal staring down at her.
“We need to find you a doctor,” she spoke to the closed door.
The sound of running water stopped.
“Too risky. I think we would get a lot of small talk about out-of-state people,” he replied. “It would only take a phone call to get the wrong people up here. I saw the man watching us from the office when you helped me in. He’s going to be suspicious enough.”
“No, you’ve suffered a terrible accident,” she said. “I’ve taken care of everything. You’re my convalescent brother.”
She picked at lint on the green bedspread.
“Smart girl. Damn, I sure feel like that all right,” he groaned as he leaned over the sink, washing the blood from his face with a washcloth. The badly swollen right side of his face along puffed-up lips made him look like he did ten rounds in the ring. The swollen area on the back of his head remained tender as well. However, his ribs still hurt far worse than anything else.
Going back into the room, Warren cautiously dabbed his face dry with a towel and slowly sat next to the girl.
“Well, we got away from the cops. But I’m still wanted for something I didn’t do, and you’re now in major trouble with Krupin’s cronies. They won’t like you helping me after they find that luggage.”
“What do you mean? That’s what you did with the ticket, right?” She asked.
Warren paused, unsure how to explain he did not know if there was something behind the mirror.
“As I was on the floor, I overheard something about statues that the professor told you about,” he diverted from her question. “Our friends won’t like what happened to the sculptures in that luggage.”
