Chapter 40

Amber stood a few feet away, her hands tied in front of her. Behind the gagged woman, Max Minchin stood, holding a gun to her head.

“You son of a bitch,” Warren cursed when saw the terrified look on the woman’s face. He caught movement on one side when the Harry started moving toward him. Warren took a wild shot his way which missed by a mile.

“That was to get your attention. Keep moving, and I’ll kill you,” Warren told the gorilla. The big man stopped, looking at Max. The thug was waiting for his chance. Warren was in a bad spot between Harry and the professor.

“You’re not very bright, Mr. Baker. If you take another shot at my partner, I’ll be forced to hurt this sweet girl,” Max spoke up as he moved the gun to her back. “You see if I pull the trigger; she would die this way very slowly. That would be most unfortunate.”

“She has nothing to do with this. Let her go, and we can finish this deal. Everyone walks away happy.” Warren told him, pushing a new tack on the small man. The professor laughed.

“No, I don’t think so. You see, I hold a position of strength in these negotiations,” Max said. “If you don’t give us those statues, your girlfriend dies painfully.”

“Trust that I’ll rip you apart if you do it, you bastard,” Warren growled at him while he kept glancing at Mary and Harry, who watched their new partner.

The professor shrugged. “Come now, you will not have that amount of time since my partners will get to you before that happens. Now, please keep your focus, my young man,” he told Warren who immediately despised the air of intellectual superiority. But it gave him an idea.

“What’s in it for you, professor?” Warren asked. “Scholars are not generally involved with thugs like Krupin’s people.”

“It was an arrangement brought on by necessity, I’m afraid,” Max told him as he smiled. “You see, my partners needed someone who can supply the necessary contacts to… how do they say it? Fence, yes, that’s the term, fence the goods.”

“Fence what, those two damn statues? That makes no sense,” Warren replied. “Why wouldn’t you just sell them on the black market for art?”
