More On AI and Writing
Just a quick review of the recent headlines finds plenty of news about Artificial Intelligence (AI) including some interesting analysis/thoughts here on Substack. Here’s one from bad cattitude that I found intriguing, to say the least. Whether or not you agree with the author, the idea of AI and the impact on human credentials comes fundamentally around the question of trust. The fundamental question we’ll need to address as a society. In an age where people throw around terms like ‘misinformation’ or ‘propaganda’ as it relates to almost everything now, we will need to come to grips with the most important question. Who are you going to believe?
As for writers/creators, the changes are here and not necessarily bad for us…well, at least so far. I’ve found some AI at work in my grammar program which helps me daily. However, the tool is not to a point that I can rely on it. I must still double-check the changes for accuracy. In a way, it’s a bit like using Windows programs and hoping that you don’t get a frozen screen or locked up to a point of rebooting.
I’ve looked into several of the AI tools for writers, including Hivemind, Jasper, and Quillbot. Most of them appear focused on small snippets, process flow (project based) or marketing/blogs, etc. While it might be my process writing/developing, when I used these tools, I came away unimpressed. As expected, the amount of information you need to feed the tool requires a fair amount of “outlining” and character building. Also, you’re limited to your input so the output corresponds to quality of the short story. That’s not unexpected given in IT we’ve had a term for years about data (garbage in = garbage out). I also wonder at the actually library of data these tools use to analyze for plagiarism. While the vastness of the Internet allows for huge amount of data, most companies/entities keep tight control of their data.
However, you might consider the tools useful to your work. Here are some other writers and their thoughts of tools for you.
