If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve probably noticed my penchant for first issue comics. While I try to focus upon Golden Age (being a history buff), I sometimes stumble across a batch that just looks too interesting to pass up. You’ll see this in my latest bundle of comics which range from early 1990s with most dating 2020/21. Even though I prefer indie comics, this batch is all Marvel (with an Epic imprint for one).
To me, the most obvious difference is the quality of the stories and the artwork in the few 1990s comics. I thought I would try out some of these latest issues but I mean, I REALLY could not stand reading most of the 2021 comics, even Black Panther issues (although the artwork is better than the others from the year. In my opinion, they have terrible to substandard artwork (for the most part) and even worse storylines. You see additional comments below on each issue.
BEST of the batch
Cool cover getting away from slick with nice artwork inside. Story is ok for a start to series.
I kind of like the embossed cover with the action on this comic. Definitely nice artwork inside with a 90s feel. Storyline is interesting as well. I’ll be searching for others of this series.
Another 90s comic I had no knowledge about. However, cover’s pretty nice and the artwork is not bad inside. Storyline keeps you guessing and confused which I guess is needed for the start of a series…lol.
Overall not bad although the cover and artwork aren’t as good as the others above. Overall story is interesting and keeps you turning pages.
All of the above are keepers for me.
WORST OF THE WORST
The single best word for the following is atrocious.
Artwork is middling and the storyline is worse with little purpose beyond the need for female heroes doing what the male heroes do. Out the door.
Alright, some might like this art style but I’m not one of them. It’s like bad anime look from the 70s. Story is junk. Another leaving the collection.
I read the generally favorable reviews on this comic before I looked it over. I don’t agree. The story is ok, I suppose, but throwing in Iron Man with a couple of throw away lines meant nothing to the story. BIGGEST HIT - The art really IS NOT that good (let alone impressive enough for something that is supposed to be a restart from Jack Kirby). Sorry, out the door for me.
