Recent conversations about this series from a few fans gave me the idea to expound a bit upon the main characters in the first book as a bit of a preview.
Ray Irish is the opposite of many traditional detectives. He’s a drunk war vet who came to Oyster City on the top of a rail car. He only ended up as a shamus because he saved a corrupt city official from a (probably deserved) beating. Still, I find the character engaging as Ray kept taking me through twists and turns that I did not expect as the four novels came together.
Catherine Bennett is a short, freckled face girl with blond-red hair and blue eyes likes to be called Cat. A quick learner and willing to go where trouble is, she's not above using her body to get what she values the most, money. Her quick temper and mean streak comes from growing up with a single mom who survived as a prostitute on the docks of Oyster City.
J. Allan Dunn carries the nervous twitch of someone always on the lookout for trouble. That comes from his role as a corrupt political hack who works for the mayor as the director of public works.
Henry La Spina carries the reputation of a genial local bishop with a stellar reputation for helping the poor. A large man but soft from years of eating and drinking, Henry is quite a bit older than his wife and growing tired of his wife's public escapades with a local mobster.
Greye La Spina is a wife considered too sexy for an aging bishop. Greye carries a terrible reputation along with a deep secret with Quincannon, the chauffer and handyman who appears more interested in directing Greye than working for the Bishop.
I hope you’ll take the time to look at these stories as I’m rather proud of it.
