Two More Golden Age Comics
Shield-Wizard First Issue along with Little Orphan Annie
I was happy to get in one of my earliest first issues a week ago. It didn’t grade high since it’s incomplete with a missing centerfold. However, it’s affordable for me and has a very patriotic display for the summer of 1940 (over a year before the war hits the US).
Shield–Wizard Comics was published by MLJ Comics, the precursor to Archie comics. The series ran for thirteen issues between Summer 1940 and Winter 1944.
For those of you who remember Ralphie trying to get the secret coder ring from his daily listening of Little Orphan Annie, here’s an interesting comic that came in. If you knew I was referencing A Christmas Story, a film from 1983, kudos out to you. Not in the best of shape, it still fits my collection criteria.
It’s kind of difficult to find information about this issue. I believe there’s three give away issues with different covers and ads. This Issue #1941B is Little Orphan Annie Quaker Giveaway that was published 1941 by David McKay Publishing. On the back is a ad for Quaker Puffed Wheat and Rice cereals.
